We started as a group of 20 recently unemployed artists in Oakland. The pandemic was changing the world around us: businesses were closing, evictions were rising, and more and more people were finding themselves homeless. We decided to focus our efforts on building emergency housing for our unhoused neighbors. Our mission was to build 12 tiny houses to provide shelter and security during the health scare and economic collapse. Now we have ended on 15 total tiny homes.
We reached out goal of building 15 emergency tiny homes for our unhoused community during the Covid era.
We continue to work with our recipients on their paths towards permanent affordable housing. 5 out of the 15 have achieved this goal so far.
The beginnings
In the past 3 years, we have grown to a team of 200 volunteers made up of artists, carpenters, activists, and advocates. Many of us are houseless ourselves and connected to support one another while unemployed or underemployed due to COVID-19.
Our team
We have built 15 tiny homes already and we are grateful for your support in reaching this goal. We are no longer building but are helping residents work towards gaining permanent affordable housing.
